Our story





We are the online learning expansion of our original brand, Mandarin for Kidz which was founded in 2009 by Richard Ang in Kensington, NSW Australia. Our focus at Mandarin for Lyfe is establishing in your child, mandarin as a second language throughout primary and secondary school for life.



Our program





Our teachers tenaciously teach the YCT levels 1 through to 5 which prepare non-native speakers through to senior high school level, making it a natural transition to take it up in year 11 and 12 as a LOTE, or just continue enjoying the conversational level of speaking, reading and writing that our course provides. Through weekly online small group sessions with our exceptional teachers who are creative and experienced in the online teaching space, every child can have a personalised learning experience.

Meet our directors





Joanne and Deb have been working together for nearly four years, starting and expanding the Upper North Shore MFK Centre since 2017. With their joint experience and passion for this space, through the 2020 COVID-19 challenge to every business, Deb and Joanne pivoted MFK to focus on online teaching and over 2020 and their teachers have flourished in the new system and method.



Jo & Deb






Friends since 2012, Deb and Jo share a passion for being organised, prioritising family life, and getting things done! They decided to join forces in June of 2017 to run Mandarin for Kidz in their local area in the Upper North Shore, New South Wales, Australia. Both had enrolled their children at the Crows Nest centre since they were each three years old and saw the value in providing their children with a foundation in a second language, especially Mandarin with their Singapore (Jo) and Chinese (Deb) backgrounds/heritage.



Jo is bilingual and specialises in early childhood learning, running preschool centres in both Singapore and Sydney, now working also teaching university aged students at Excelsior College. She hires, trains and supports our mandarin teachers to constantly grow and build on their craft in teaching.



Deb is not bilingual having grown up in Australia, but has definitely picked up more of mandarin through running this business! Because of her loss of a second language being 3rd generation in, she sees the value and capacity of children learning a second language early, so that they can bridge other cultures as they grow into adulthood and their futures.



Together Jo and Deb are committed to providing a robust and caring environment through Mandarin for Lyfe for children to flourish in learning Mandarin. Their teachers are a committed and fun loving team who give their best to every student.

Cindy Laoshi


YCT Level 3, 4 | Rabbit Level Teacher


Cindy Laoshi is an accomplished Mandarin teacher, having taught for over 2 years, and prior to obtaining her Master of Arts in Chinese-English Translation in 2009, taught English in China. She has a tender but firm approach which works well with the students! She lives with her family in Sydney.


Danon Laoshi


YCT Level 1, 2 | Panda Level Teacher


Danon Laoshi is a tenacious teacher and truly looks for the best in her students. She has been teaching with us for over 2 years and worked with a number of age groups. She loves to see them improve week by week provides great feedback on their homework. She lives in Sydney with her family.


Echo Laoshi


Panda Level Teacher


Echo Laoshi is a lovely, gentle person who nurtures the children in her teaching! She has worked with us for over 3 years, both in face to face lessons and with online classes. Her passion is working with the Panda group and has taught this level for more than 2 years. Echo is originally from China and now lives in Sydney with her family.


Hanping Laoshi


YCT Level 2 Teacher


Hanping Laoshi specialises in education and teaching primary school students. She has a masters in Education and teachies at high schools as well as with Mandarin for Lyfe. She teaches our YCT2 classes and is our relief teacher. She is based in Sydney.


Suzanne Laoshi


Panda Level Teacher


Suzanne Laoshi is an accomplished teacher with a Masters in Interpretation and Translation (2009) and extensive experience in the education industry. She enjoys engaging the little ones and seeing them enjoy learning the language. Suzanne is originally from China and now lives in Sydney.


Ciellene Laoshi



Panda Level Teacher



Cielline Laoshi is an experienced teacher and loves to encourage her students to engage more with the Mandarin language. She graduated from University of Sydney with a diploma in Language teaching. Her passion in teaching has always been an opportunity for the students to learn and grow. Cielline is originally from Taiwan and spent her school years in Australia.

Our teachers are our asset.
We can truly say that over the years our Mandarin teachers have become an amazing community; learning from each other, supporting each other. We are constantly taking on best practice techniques and training up in ways to present and interact with your children that brings out the best.

We meet as a team 1-2 times per term, to debrief, discuss how to improve, and simply build this community to be the best teachers they can be. We know that a bond between the student and teacher must exist in order for a child to enjoy learning, and every one of our teachers loves getting to know their children; finding what engages them and seeing them grow and thrive in the space they’re given.
